Sukarno, declared independence |
Two or three decades ago almost every kid is
participated in the flag ceremony, performed regularly at the school in each
Mondays or in the historic day for the nation. It was done routinely so the kids memorized the important days, moreover
relating to the independence day of the nation. They could explain the meaning
behind the date 17 - 08-1945 and eloquently sang the national anthem of
Indonesia. Unlikely, much kid now never again took the flag ceremony at the
school particularly in international school. Even history lesson is no longer
intense talking about Independence Day except when it comes to day.
The history of Indonesia has been began long time in
the BC century, but the most devastating period started when Europeans arrived
in Indonesia from the 16th century. They seek to monopolize the sources of
valuable nutmeg,
cloves,
and cube pepper
in Maluku.
In 1602 the Dutch established the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and became
the dominant European power by 1610. Following bankruptcy, the VOC was formally
dissolved in 1800, and the government of the Netherlands established the Dutch East
Indies under government control. By the early 20th century, Dutch
dominance extended to the current boundaries. The Japanese invasion and subsequent occupation in
1942-45 during WW II ended Dutch rule, and encouraged the previously suppressed
Indonesian independence movement. Two days after the surrender of Japan in
August 1945, nationalist leader, Sukarno, declared independence and became president. It was happen
on August 17, 1945. The Netherlands tried to reestablish its rule, but a bitter armed and diplomatic struggle
ended in December 1949, when in the face of international pressure, the Dutch
formally recognized Indonesian independence.
It is inspire LITTLE INDONESIA to use the symbol of independence as a theme, especially numbers 17, 08, and 1945. Ideally the numbers should be recorded in the minds of kids and when the time comes, they could associate those numbers to Independence Day of Indonesia
